It has been the fastest growing community in the entire state. In 2000, fewer than 2,000 people resided here. In 2014, it was ranked second in a list of the safest communities in Colorado.
The town was settled in the 19th century, and it was named after a local landowner, Jacob Firestone. Nearby Fort Junction was a sod fortress constructed due to the ongoing Colorado War, a conflict between Native Americans and those of European descent. In 1872, the first active production coal mine in the state of Colorado was opened here. Ultimately, five mines produced coal here until 1947. One, the Grant Mine, produced enough coal to fill a hypothetical coal train 200 miles long.
