Welcome to the village of Niwot! Idyllic Niwot is an unincorporated village of Boulder County, a bedroom community less than 10 miles northeast of the metropolitan City of Boulder. Niwot, despite our relatively small size, boasts a higher per-capita income than many equivalent communities nearby, ranking our hamlet as the 17th most prosperous area in Colorado State. Niwot, originally an indigenous settlement of the Native Americ an Arapaho tribe, first received pioneer residents in 1858, with the first waves of the Gold Rush. Our village, named to honor Arapaho Chief Niwot, a tribal leader of the Boulder area during the 19th century, means “left-handed”, a cultural origin we celebrate annually during our Left Hander's Day. In 1875, two years after the Colorado Central Railroad extended its lines northeast, the village of Niwot was platted, though the community never incorporated formally. Over the next 75 years, however, our strategic location straddling the rail lines brought our community an unprecedented amount of growth and industry, particularly in agriculture, as it created a link to markets as far away as Denver and Wyoming. At the beginning of the 20th century, our business district relocated to the 2nd Avenue district, where it remains strong and flourishing today as the Niwot Historic District. Other locales where residents can explore our history include the Niwot Native American Carvings exhibition and scheduled events presented by the Niwot Historical Society’s Lecture Series.

Niwot’s primary attraction, like much of Colorado, is the pristine beauty of the mountains and open areas surrounding our community. Hiking, mountain biking, equestrian trails, golfing, camping, fly fishing, rock climbing, tubing and class II-V whitewater kayaking are just a few regional favorites, as well as unique adventures, like glider rides and hot air balloon flights. Local destinations to explore the great outdoors and enjoy its bounty include Haystack Mountain Golf Course, Saint Vrain State Park, Shadow Grass Park, Pawnee National Grassland, Boulder Reservoir, Eldorado Canyon State Park, Flagstaff Mountain, Wonderland Lake & Foothills Nature Center, Caribou Ranch Open Space, Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center, Roosevelt National Forest, and Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
