Mead, COSearch all Mead CO Homes!Welcome to Weld County, Colorado’s easy-going community of Mead! Located just 27 miles northeast of Boulder in the Greeley Metro Area, Mead has a character all its own, and has historically touted itself as "the little town that could". Our community is on the brink of its next burst of growth and expansion, close to the bigger city of Boulder, but maintaining the charm of its quiet and residential feel. The Highlandlake community was the original site of what would later become the Town of Mead. Our town started out as an area of settlement for the indigenous tribes of Native Americans originally populating the mountains and open spaces of Colorado. In 1905, the Great Western Railroad constructed a feeder railroad line from Longmont to Johnstown, transporting the sugar beet harvest to the Longmont refinery. This rail line passed directly through the residential property of Paul Mead. Subsequently, the businesses of Highlandlake relocated railside, leading Paul Mead to plat a new town adjacent to the tracks in 1906. In 1908, this “new” town was incorporated and named to honor Mead. Our history is available for exploration at the Colorado Railroad Museum, Fort Vasquez State History Museum, the Colorado Historical Society, The Callahan House, Old St. Stephen's Church, Dougherty Museum and a number of nationally registered Victorian homes, old cabins and mills in Mead and its nearby region. Our local “claim to fame” is the historic Church of Christ Congregational of Highlandlake, owned and maintained by our local preservation society Historic Highlandlake, Inc., which “starred” in several scenes of the Bruce Willis film, Die Hard II. Colorado is a nature enthusiast’s dream, and Mead’s outdoor beauty is certainly no exception. At the present, our town is creating a plan for its Open Space, Parks and Trails, with the vision of developing and establishing a sustainable park, open space and trails system for the community. During our planning and creation stage, however, we encourage our residents and visitors to explore the numerous nearby areas of natural beauty in our region, including Mead Skatepark, The Dirt Hills, Willow Farm Park, Pawnee National Grassland, St. Vrain State Park, the historic South Platte Trail, Marfell Lake, Boulder Reservoir, Wonderland Lake & Foothills Nature Center, Longmont Recreation Services' Centennial Pool, recreational American Discovery Trail and Poudre River National Recreation Trail, or the Pawnee Pioneer Trails scenic byway. Mead’s cultural scene is equally vibrant: the Hero's eXperience, Kids' Park Lafayette, Longmont Museum and Cultural Center, Tower of Compassion and the Firehouse Art Center are a few attractions local to the Mead area for entertainment, relaxation and enjoyment, as well as the unique businesses, boutiques and eateries of Downtown Longmont, including Irresistible Books, Orange Door, Stonebridge Games, Used Book Emporium, or Rockin Robin’s Retro & Resale. Nearby, the Promenade Shops at Centerra offer other entertainment options for Mead locals to enjoy. In addition to the many fine lectures, performances and workshops scheduled by the nearby Longmont Museum and Cultural Center, there are a number of festivals and events available to Mead area residents, including the Flatirons Mineral Club Annual Gem & Mineral Show, Chautauqua Silent Film Series, Mud Hen 5K Race, Underwater Easter Egg Hunt, Longmont Kinetics Sculpture Race at Union Reservoir and the Boulder County Parade and Chuckwagon Breakfast.
