Lyons is convenient to both natural beauty and urban areas, located at the juncture of the North St. Vrain Creek and the South St. Vrain Creek, 20 miles east of Rocky Mountain National Park, 30 minutes to Boulder’s north and just under an hour’s drive from Denver, making our community ideal for both business and pleasure! Our area was originally home to a variety of Native American tribes, drawn to the vast grasslands providing a rich hunting ground for bison. Incorporated officially in 1891, the Town of Lyons’ Historical Society is committed to the preservation of our past, from our indigenous early history of Cheyenne, Pawnee, Arapaho Comanche and the Utne Nation, to the Gold Rush boomtowns, red sandstone quarries and railroad expansions, each of which contributed to the community of Lyons today. Our pioneering past is preserved, archived and available to explore in Lyons, from the designated Historic District to the structures listed on the National Register, including the Griff Evans Homestead, the Chisholm/Truebood Home, the Lyons School (contemporary site of the Redstone Museum), the Bradford Homestead (now Olson Property), Sites Milkhouse (now the C. Shepard Gallery), and the McAllister Saloon/Frank Market (current site of Lyons Fork restaurant).

Lyons is abundant in natural beauty, Colorado’s “Double Gateway to the Rockies”, bordered by 3,206 acres and over 12 miles of multi-use trails at Hall Ranch Open Space’s back country, as well as the 4,923 acres of Heil Valley Ranch Open Space. Lyons Parks and Recreation maintain seven town parks: Bohn Park, Kurt Carlson Skate Park, Lyons Valley River Park/ Corridor Trail, Lyons Whitewater Park, Meadow Park and Sandstone Park. These parks, as well as Town of Lyons Trails, Hall Ranch, Heil Valley Ranch, Rabbit Mountain, Lions Gulch Trail, Picture Rock Trail, Lyons Dirt Jump Bike Skills Park and Button Rock Preserve, provide a variety of outdoor activity—hiking, mountain biking, equestrian trails, camping, fly fishing, rock climbing, tubing and class II-V whitewater kayaking are just a few regional favorites at these open-use areas, as well as at nearby recreational areas in Boulder, Nederland and the surrounding towns of our metro area, including Eldorado Canyon State Park, Flagstaff Mountain, White Rocks Nature Preserve, Caribou Ranch Open Space, Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center, Roosevelt National Forest, and Golden Gate Canyon State Park, just to name a few.

Though a nature-lover’s dream, there’s more to do in Lyons than what’s outdoors—the Lyons Arts and Humanities Council, Clarifier Project and Confluence Community Arts (CoCoA) work to bring culture to the community and promote the arts in Lyons.
